What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion, often referred to as microderm, is a cosmetic procedure popular in day spas, doctors' practices, medical spas, and salons. During a microdermabrasion treatment, the dead, outermost surface of the skin is partially or completely removed by light abrasion to reveal glowing, younger-looking skin below.
The most popular and effective method for microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide crystals, although the procedure can also be done with sodium bicarbonate crystals or with no crystals at all (see our Dermaglow® Hydrabrasion System™ section for information on our crystal-free attachment). We make all three alternatives available to you.
The stainless steel hand piece on our microdermabrasion devices sends a gentle stream of crystals toward the skin and vacuums off the removed dead skin cells and excess particles. Our Dermaglow® medical spa microdermabrasion equipment allows the crystals to come out only upon contact with the skin, so your treatment rooms stay clean and hygienic.
Known as the “lunchtime facial,” microdermabrasion is not painful and requires no anesthetic; additionally, its only post-procedure side effect is a pinkish skin tone which usually disappears within a few minutes or hours depending on the degree of abrasion that took place.
Microdermabrasion is commonly performed in conjunction with facial spa treatments, making it a profitable add-on to just about any facial treatment.
What are the key conditions that microdermabrasion can treat?
Microdermabrasion can be an excellent solution for a wide range of skin conditions, including:

Additionally, if you’ve already been trained in microdermabrasion, our thorough video and manual will be more than enough to set you on a successful path toward using our devices properly and effectively.
What happens if my microdermabrasion device breaks down?
Although Dermaglow® microdermabrasion machines are known for their sturdiness and robust manufacturing, there are rare occasions during which a client’s machine needs repair or resolution of a malfunction. If your Dermaglow® machine develops a mechanical or functional difficulty, there are two things you can do:
- Call our toll-free technical support line at (888) 345-4569, ext. 26, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday. Our trained technical staff can usually resolve your issue over the phone quickly.
- After you call, if you and the technician determine that the machine needs further repair or diagnosis, you can send the machine to us. Any repairs we make will be covered under your lifetime warranty (shipping costs are not covered under the warranty). Upon request, so your business is not at standstill while repairs and machine testing are being performed, we will send you a free loaner device. You need only to pay the associated shipping costs.
How much can I charge my clients for microdermabrasion treatments?
Though rates vary throughout the country, the range is typically between a low of $100 per treatment up to $225 per treatment. Traditionally, a single treatment costs much more than the per-treatment cost for a client who buys a series of treatments. For instance, you could charge $175 for a one-time treatment and $900 for a series of six treatments, so the per-treatment cost would be $150 if purchased as a package. We recommend that you check the market rate for microdermabrasion treatments in your specific area, determine the pricing at both medical and esthetic facilities, and make a decision based on your geographic location.
